But some will dictate the direction that the fashion industry takes in the years to come, and the process starts with 2017.

#1) Myntra's acquisition of Jabong

In July, Flipkart's Myntra pipped Snapdeal to the post by acquiring online fashion store Jabong for $70 million. Though Jabong itself had been on a downswing since 2013 when it was valued at $508 million, the acquisition of the portal by Flipkart- Myntra was the biggest news in the Indian fashion world since their own merger in 2014. The Flipkart-Myntra-Jabong ecosystem now holds sway over two-third of the high-margin online fashion market, and signals the beginning of the consolidation period in e-commerce.


#2) Automation is in, stealthily

When leading fabric and fashion retailer Raymond truncated its workforce by a third across 16 manufacturing units in September, it surprisingly didn't send industry observers into a tizzy. The move by Raymond was the first by a big company towards a direction that experts have been talking about for a while, and the reasons behind the Raymond decision were simple: a need to cut costs and an equal need to increase efficiency. Textiles 4.0 is in, and it's been a silent move so far. The textiles apparel industry in India, however, will need to maintain a balance since the sector is one of the biggest employers in the country. Words of caution had come earlier in a Texprocil study which had emphasised on the need for job creation.

Flipkart launches native ads for all brands

Flipkart has introduced native advertising for companies to engage better with customers on its mobile platform, including for brands that do not sell through it, as India's largest online marketplace seeks to monetise its sizable user traffic. Through Flipkart's new 'brand story ad format', companies will be able to target specific customers browsing through products related to their own on the online marketplace — similar to what Snapdeal has just rolled out.


Companies will also be able to use data from Flipkart for generating sales leads or run pre-product launch surveys. "Unlike a Google, which is search and display-focussed, or Facebook, which is more social, we are very transaction-focussed with a strong purchase intent," said Ravi Garikipati, whom Flipkart hired in June as entrepreneur-in-residence to grow the online advertising business it launched this year. "Our brands will also get a holistic view on their return on investments on the marketing spends (and) about a user's awareness of the product, intent to buy, to the final purchase," Garikipati said.


Flipkart started offering online advertising and brand consulting for its merchants early this year, diversifying into fee-based businesses to carve out new high-margin revenue streams and accelerate profitability.


In August, Flipkart was firming plans to phase out the commissions it charges merchants and instead urge them to advertise on its platform, for a fee. Cofounder and group chief executive Sachin Bansal heads the advertising business. The company has since launched a product listing ads platform on its mobile app for sellers to be able to promote their products. Flipkart has more than 5,000 brands listed on it platform and 50,000 sellers, which it wants to double. "Over time, we want to be able to create our own publisher network since we have strong user profiles," said Garikipati.



"Currently we are building our own as well as integrating with public exchanges including Adnexus, Google Ad Exchange to map the Flipkart audience to the audience that we have on these networks, to essentially retarget them." Garikipati said that about onefifth of the customers visiting Flipkart's mobile app make a purchase. Flipkart recorded revenue of Rs 2,937.7 crore in 2013-14 on selling goods worth about $1billion (about Rs 6,500 crore), and a loss of Rs 916 crore, according to regulatory filings and statements by the company.


In June, Flipkart said it was aiming to sell a total $10 billion worth of goods on its marketplace. "The ads business is a big part of gross profitability drive for us and a significant growth enabler for our profitability," said Garikipati.
